It is universally true that anyone who has a chance to be a leader, whether in group, organization, or government, wants to be a good leader. At the same time, we must admit that no human being is born with qualities of a good leader. Hence force, each of us stands a chance of being a leader, or a good leader. To answer how to be a good leader, there is a necessity to know what contributes to a good leader.

In the first place, a good leader must have his unique wisdom in dealing with all sorts of difficult situations. The reason is simple: to be a leader, one must have to be capable of doing what others are unable to do. From this perspective, a qualified leader is expected to adopt a proper approach to make the greatest benefit while with the least loss. Convincing evidence in this case is former Premier Zhu Rongji who is renowned for his wit in answering tough questions from the press on government news conference. No matter what cynical questions he may receive, a satisfactory answer can always be uttered with a result of not damaging national image but still maintaining national interest. Some people may disagree, holding that it is the fundamental requirement for a premier who represents a whole country at those big events. But there is no denying that his wisdom makes a great contribution to a good leader.

In the second place, despite being a leader, he also plays a role in the team and should learn to cooperate. The essence of team-work spirit is cooperation, without which the core interest and common goal shall never be achieved. Take ball games for example, how can a team win if each player merely focuses on personal performance and scores? Moreover, cooperation can strengthen friendship among individuals, spreading pride and building unit. As one Chinese proverb puts it, “union is strength.”

Last but not least, a good leader should learn to listen to different opinions. It can be well demonstrated by two Chinese old sayings, that is, “four eyes see more than two”, and “many hands make light work”. Respecting to different voices is an efficient way of avoiding dictatorship, for a dictatorial leader will be isolated one day or another.

All in all, we can not expect ourselves to be a great leader like Abraham Lincoln or Premier Zhou. But at least we can try to be a good leader as long as we can be witty, willing to collaborate and respect others.
